There’s more to spring in Belgium than just flowers

The peloton at La Redoute

Spring has arrived in full force and Belgium is at its best. There has been a string of warm, sunny days and the gardens have replaced their winter browns with vibrant greens and splashes of color. People are once again filling up the terraces and parks and making the weekly migration to the coast. The happy times are upon us!

If you’re visiting Belgium in spring, you’ll have much to do and see. Once you’ve admired the tulips and cherry blossoms, remember that it’s also the season for cycling. During April there is a series of one-day classic road races each weekend throughout the country. It’s a fun way to get to know the Belgians and see the countryside at the same time. Stop by the supermarket for some Belgian beers, grab a picnic and some chairs and spend a relaxing (and inexpensive) afternoon in the sunshine. Even if you’re new to the sport, it’s hard not to get swept up in the excitement as the peloton rushes past.
