Canot à glace – Ice Canoeing in Québec
The Carnaval de Québec is in full swing now. One of the most exciting events, the ice canoe race, took place last Sunday. Originally used in the winter as a necessary means of transport between the two sides of the Saint-Laurent river and the nearby islands, ice canoeing has become an extreme sport practiced almost exclusively in Québec City. There are a few teams elsewhere in the province and even in Calgary, Chicago and France, but the center of activity remains in Québec City. More than 50 teams took part in the Carnaval de Québec race this year, with the men’s elite team completing a course of 6.4 kilometers and the amateurs and elite women’s teams racing 3.2 kilometers.
