Hiking Québec: Les Coulées – Le Parc National de la Jacques-Cartier

Last weekend we had incredible warm weather so we drove up to the Parc National de la Jacques-Cartier. At just 30 minutes from Québec City, this will probably become our backyard for the summer. We’ve got our membership cards for the year, so we hope to do as many hikes as weather and time will permit.

The first hike we tried was Les Coulées, probably named for the many different streams and rivers we passed. It’s a moderate loop of 9.7 km, but we added on another small 3 km trail called L’Aperçu for a total hike of about 12 km. There were a couple of good climbs – about 500 meters in all – but nothing too strenuous. We saw lots of small forest flowers which I’m not able to identify, and a few chipmunks. The trees should be green again soon, which will give the trail a whole new feeling. The ranger we spoke with advised that we try this one in spring as it often has a lot of mosquitoes in summer. Also, he thought we may see more wildlife since the trees were still bare. No such luck, but others hiking before and after us in the same area apparently saw a moose and her baby, a fox and a porcupine. Maybe next time!
