Essipit and Les Escoumins

In early summer, we rented a chalet in Essipit, near Les Escoumins for several nights with Mathieu’s family. Though we had rainy, cold weather almost the entire time, we enjoyed exploring this little section of the Côte Nord. This far up, the water is salty and one can observe the rise and fall of the tides. It almost felt like we were at the sea, instead of just on the St. Lawrence river.

The stormy weather really churned up the waves, which we watched with fascination from the warmth of our chalet. Hard to believe this is a river!

We took full advantage of every break in the rain to wander along the coastline. The views were stunning, and I found it to be very similar to the Maine coast.

We saw several whales right off the coast, and lots of interesting birds.

We even got lucky when the sun came out one afternoon. It gave a whole new feeling to the scenery.
